“This is the only ‘report,’ as we called them back then, that I saved from public school, because of the personal history behind it. And I think I liked the nice red A+ and the teacher’s comments. She was my favorite English teacher. Warm and supportive. I wanted to be her. In any case, besides showing my early interest in other cultures and travel, I think it shows the development of one of my writing strengths, description. As for the accompanying photo, this is one of the only photos I have of myself at this age. I hated getting my picture taken. It was my awkward stage, and given the fact I was once mistaken for a boy in India, there is a reason I am just peeking out from behind my lovely mother. That’s an elephant under us, BTW.”
